Ruiru, Juja& Thika Sewerage Systems Development – Phases I & II
Scope: Design Review, Construction Supervision, Feasibility Study & Detailed Design
Consultancy Fees: USD 1,079,860
This multi-phase assignment formed a critical pillar of the Nairobi Metropolitan Region sewerage expansion programme, aligned with Kenya Vision 2030 and designed to respond to rapid population growth, increased water supply, and expanding urban infrastructure.
Phase I
Ruiru Sewerage Works, the consultancy team undertook comprehensive design review and construction supervision services for approximately 56 km of trunk and collector sewers, ranging from DN 225 mm to DN 1,200 mm in precast concrete and steel pipes, together with a 10,000 m³/day wastewater treatment facility. The treatment works comprised anaerobic, facultative, and maturation ponds configured to provide robust, low-energy wastewater treatment suitable for fast-growing peri-urban areas. Services included review of design assumptions, preparation of construction drawings, stakeholder engagement workshops, coordination of works, supervision of field surveys, quality assurance and control, and rigorous project cost management to ensure technical integrity and value for money.
Phase II
Juja and Thika Sewerage Systems focused on feasibility studies and detailed design to extend sewerage coverage and strengthen treatment capacity within Juja and Thika municipalities. The scope included detailed design of approximately 40 km of precast concrete trunk sewers (DN 375–750 mm) and 38 km of uPVC reticulation sewers (DN 300 mm). The assignment also covered the rehabilitation and augmentation of the Thika Sewage Treatment Works, increasing treatment capacity from 6,000 m³/day to 11,700 m³/day, alongside the design of additional maturation ponds at Ruiru STW to enhance treatment efficiency for flows of up to 10,500 m³/day. Energy generation feasibility was also assessed as part of the treatment system optimization strategy.
